If you’re planning to remodel or redecorate a living room or family room, you’re probably thinking about color schemes, furniture arrangements and overall styles. 9. Neutral Nook
KED Interiors designed this suburban Chicago family room with a beige sofa that fits snugly inside a sunny nook. Paired with a round coffee table and armchair, both of which are upholstered in a similarly nubby, neutral fabric, the sofa looks like a comfy place to curl up while a fire blazes in the stone fireplace.
8. Forged Connection
Floating wood benches flank a burnished black fireplace surround in this midcentury-style San Diego living room by KNC Design Group. The fireplace’s wraparound design helps connect the space to the adjacent kitchen, as does the repetition of walnut, black and white finishes and clean lines throughout the two zones.
7. Double Take
The views are spectacular from this contemporary Austin, Texas, living room by Rachel Farrington Design and Younger Homes. Muted gray, black and white finishes (including Portola Paints Roman Clay in the color Klamath on the fireplace wall) provide a foil for the vibrant sky and greenery. But a side-by-side television and fireplace design that puts both elements at a comfortable viewing height draws attention back inside.
6. Natural Inclinations
Tall windows, potted plants, floral-shaped sconces and fresh blooms bring the outdoors into this living room by Utah-based DayHouse Studio, which specializes in biophilic (nature-driven) design. Layered rugs and mudcloth-pattern pillows give the room a cozy, collected feel while adding indigo and terra-cotta accents to the earth-toned space.
5. Stonewashed Serenity
Jennifer Morrell of An Inspiring Home filled this sunny Waxhaw, North Carolina, family room in soft shades of denim, taupe and honey. The short side of the custom modular sectional faces the rustic stone fireplace, which is flanked by built-in cabinets and draws the eye up to the beamed cathedral ceiling. The long side faces a console and TV. Viewers can snack and kick up their feet with impunity thanks to the sectional’s easy-clean Crypton performance fabric.
4. Canadian Chill
Chervin Kitchen & Bath added storage, style and display space to this modern cottage-style living room outside Toronto by flanking its fireplace with custom white oak cabinets. The color complements the wood ceiling and floor and pulls honey tones out of the fireplace’s cut-stone surround. Notice the transom window at the top right, which brings light from the large windows into the interior spaces.
3. Coastal Comforts
In a Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, home built by Konrady & Son Construction, a stacked TV and fireplace anchor one end of an open-concept kitchen and family room that share a coffered wood ceiling. Kasey Smith of Kasey Smith Interiors camouflaged the TV’s black screen by cladding the fireplace with dark clay bricks. She then furnished the space with a light-colored slipcovered corner sectional, mohair armchairs and an ottoman coffee table. The hand-poured concrete fireplace bench offers another place to perch.
2. Night and Day
The owners of this Ventura, California, home found Christine Craig of Designology Studio on Houzz and tasked her with giving the open-concept living room a “classy edge.” Craig redesigned the space with a moody color scheme, a new and improved TV and fireplace feature clad in black-flamed granite ledger stone, and new ceiling beams painted in Sherwin-Williams Black Fox. Painting the slider doors to match the beams was the final touch that made the ocean views pop.
1. Friend Zone
This North Carolina living room’s medium-wood-tone ceiling beams, matching built-in cabinetry and light stone fireplace were all part of the design for the new-build home. Jena Bula of Delphinium Design focused on the furnishings and styling, selecting attractive but durable fabrics and finishes, including a soft synthetic rug, that could hold up to frequent gatherings with friends and family.
In suburban Seattle, this sunlight-filled contemporary living room by Space Lab Design Services is a symphony of warm earthy tones, materials and textures. Part of a great room that includes the kitchen, the living area has a lofted ceiling and a wall of glass separating it from a covered patio and the leafy landscape beyond. The outdoor fireplace is made from the same stone that clads the living room’s fireplace wall, which helps to dissolve the distinction between the interior and exterior spaces.
